Dr. Beers is an expert on United States Far Eastern policy, and served as professor of Asian Studies in the Department of History at North Carolina State University (1955-1995). He was a Fellow in East Asian Studies (Ford Foundation, Harvard University) from 1959 to 1960, and a Fullbright Lecturer at the National Taiwan University from 1966 to 1967.
